Most beginners show up in running shoes, and running shoes are built for one direction. Pickleball is shuffles, lunges and pivots, and a sole that grips sideways is the difference between a sprain and a point. Five court shoes, from a budget pair to extra-wide.
What a court shoe does
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons describes court shoes as built for stability in all directions, against running shoes built for forward motion. The shoe guide has the injury numbers.
Flat, wide, durable
The sole
A court sole is flat and wide so it won't roll on a sideways push, with a herringbone or similar tread that grips in every direction and a rubber that lasts on concrete.
Low, firm
The heel
Running shoes have a tall, soft heel that is lovely to land on and easy to roll over. Court shoes sit low and firm so the foot stays under you.
Outdoor vs indoor
The court
Outdoor shoes have harder rubber for concrete and asphalt. Indoor shoes use softer gum rubber that grips wood and wears out fast outside.
Tennis shoes count
Already own tennis shoes?
A hard-court tennis shoe is a pickleball shoe. Volleyball and basketball shoes work indoors. Running, walking and trail shoes don't.

Weigh: K-Swiss sells a separate "Express Light Indoor"; this one is the outdoor-court version, fine on gym floors too but the sole wears faster outside.

Women's
ASIN B0DDW445GD
Suits: Players who want more cushion than a tennis shoe, and very wide feet. Men's listing; the women's is B0DDW445GD.
Weigh: The cushioning that feels good standing around gives up a little stability in a hard sideways push.
Buy court shoes in the afternoon, when feet are largest, in the socks you'll play in, and leave a thumb's width at the toe: a lunge for a dink drives the foot forward. Wide feet are common and well served here; K-Swiss, Skechers and New Balance all make wide and extra-wide. Replace them when the sole is smooth at the ball of the foot, which for a three-times-a-week player is about a year.
